The Google Interview Timeline

Recruiter Screen
30 min

Background review, role alignment, and logistics. Prepare your 60-second summary and your top 2–3 reasons for Google.

Technical Phone Screen
45–60 min

One coding problem on a shared doc. LeetCode medium difficulty. Focus on communication and testing edge cases.

Onsite (5–6 rounds)
4–5 hours

2–3 coding rounds, 1 system design (SWE L5+), 1 Googleyness/behavioral, 1 role-specific. Back-to-back via video or in person.

Hiring Committee
1–2 weeks

You do not attend. Interviewers submit scorecards and the HC reviews them. They can adjust the level the offer is made at.

Team Matching
2–4 weeks

If the HC approves, you match with teams. You typically talk to 2–3 teams before choosing.

What "Googleyness" Actually Means

Googleyness is Google's culture and values assessment. Interviewers are looking for:

  • Intellectual humility — you are smart but not arrogant
  • Collaborative nature — you share credit and work through disagreement
  • Mission alignment — you genuinely care about making information universally accessible
  • Comfort with ambiguity — you can work in uncertain environments without a clear playbook
  • Proactive ownership — you see what needs doing and do it
